The Fifth Column

The Fifth Column is an anthology of writings by my grandfather, Martin Hattersley. He has lived an interesting life, studying at Cambridge, moving to Canada, and working as a lawyer, politician, and Anglican priest, and this project seemed like a worthwhile way to breathe new life into his writings (especially given that he no longer has the capacity to take on a project like this himself). This large undertaking involved reading all of his writings (25 years of monthly columns, as well as public lectures and sermons), curating a representative selection, and all of the editing necessary to assemble the pieces into a book (and a companion website). The book design was done by Lawrence Ly, and the cover design was a collaboration between Lawrence, myself, and my brother Tim Whistance-Smith.
